This last blog post will reflect on what I’ve learned during this course, my new and current understanding of HPT, and how might continue to use the skills I’ve gained. Below, I address the following points: 1. How do you define HPT? How does your current definition differ from what you wrote in week 1?   My new definition does not differ much from my original post in week one.    Old Definition: Human Performance Technology entails finding the proper solutions for issues beyond the lack in skills and knowledge that arise in companies or organizations that effect bottom line numbers.   New Definition: Human Performance Technology entails finding the proper solutions for issues beyond the lack in skills and knowledge that arise in a company or organizations’ business goals.      2. Identify the key things you gained from this course.    In week one I addressed the question of “what do you hope to gain from this course?” with the following: ...

Speaker #2 - Kim Barnes, Leadership Development Consultant

This week the LDT program had another great speaker share their experience and wisdom. Kim Barnes of Barnes & Conti Associates, Inc. has over 35 years of experience with a background in Special Education then transitioned into the corporate industry.   She spoke to us about “exercising influence” and several aspects surrounding this including the elements of influence, its relationship to neuroscience, aspects involved in influence, the mindset, framework, and tactics when exercising influence.    She stated that  influence  is the process of moving your ideas into action through others and that effective elements of influence include strength, focus, and flexibility. She described the neuroscience relationship of influence and to incorporate the following when exercising: ·        Non-threatening approach – Kind and unassuming, not hostile when approaching.  ·        Alignment – Common interes...

Speaker #1 - Chris Ross, HPT Consultant

This past week, many from the LDT program had the luxury of listening to speaker Chris Ross. He is a Certified Safety Professional and Certified Performance Technologist who owns a consulting firm called The Engagement Effect. He has over 30 years of experience as a performance consultant, trainer, lector, and presenter.      My biggest take away from him was surrounding the importance of the gap analysis and its effectiveness on outcomes and results. I learned that the gap analysis not only plays an important role for instructional designers but that of performance technologists. Whether an individual is being hired for HPT or ID, the analysis and events surrounding it carry more than 50% of the entire work.       I was very surprised when Chris said how often businesses cannot articulate or define their outcomes and in creating true return on ROI (return on investment) or ROE (return on expectation), identifying these outcomes is critica...

Goals & Expectations

Image
This first blog post will focus on my current understanding of HPT, what my expectations are for this semester, and what I hope to do with what I have learned after this course is over. Below, I address the following points: What do you think Human Performance Technology entails? I feel like Human Performance Technology entails finding the proper solutions for issues beyond the lack in skills and knowledge that arise in companies or organizations that effect bottom line numbers.   What skills and knowledge do you already have that you feel relate to the content of this course? I understand that training is not a sole solution when prescribing for Human Performance issues and that addressing multiple organizational areas within a company are necessary for the correct solution. In taking the former into account, there can be the need for creating training, but maybe not the kind of training originally suggested or for the audience it was originally intended. With the skills I’ve deve...

528 Introduction

Hello, my name is Tori!  I’m currently enrolled in the Purdue University Online Learning Design & Technology program. I applied for this program to learn more about  Instructional Design . In previous years of employment, I was responsible for much of the onboarding process including employee training and new hire orientation, etc. and this is where I found how much I enjoy teaching/training. I also have a background in  graphic design and illustration . I’m excited that once completing this program, I can combine the two to enter a field of work that I absolutely enjoy.    Other interesting facts, my husband and I are avid sports fans, we enjoy all sports. Additionally, I like DIY projects and outdoor recreational activities as well (i.e. hiking, riding bikes, etc.)
